Longnor Wakes Week

With the school summer holidays drawing to a close, it marks the beginning of Longnor Wakes Week. A tradition dating back as far as 1697, wakes week begins on Monday 2nd September. Here’s a list of some of the events happening this year:


Sunday 1st September, 2019 - Blessing of the Well.

Held at St. Bartholomews Church from 6:00pm. Supported by Longnor Action Group.


Monday 2nd September, 2019 - Car Treasure Hunt.

The treasure hunt commences from Longnor Market Square, where registration for the event is between 6:30pm & 7:00pm. Entry is £5 per car. Cash prizes to be won. For more information, contact helenkidd82@hotmail.co.uk or visit the Longnor Action Group FaceBook page.


Wednesday 4th September, 2019 - Coffee Tasting.

Held at St. Bartholomews Church in the village from 10am; entry is free. Coffee samples from Azorieblue, Derbyshire.


Thursday 5th September, 2019 - Longnor Races.

Probably the more well known day of wakes week.

  • 11:30am - Children’s Pony Gymkhana & Pony Race for Adult Riders

  • 01:45pm - Open Trotting under B.H.R.C. rules

  • 03:30pm - Motorcycle racing under A.C.U. rules

  • 06:30pm - Cross Country Races under A.A.A. rules


£3,500 in prizes and silver cups are up for grabs!


Saturday 7th September, 2019 - LWW Bake-Off and Afternoon Tea.

Dust off those cookbooks, and put on that pinny! All kinds of baked goods are welcome, from cakes and biscuits, to pies and bread! There is also an under 14’s category for the younger master chefs!

Entries need to be dropped off and registered at the School between 12:30pm and 1:30pm on the day. Entry is 50p, but the title of star baker is priceless! For more information, contact helenkidd82@hotmail.co.uk or visit the Longnor Action Group FaceBook page.


Saturday 7th September, 2019 - Afternoon Tea

Held at St. Bartholomews School between 2:30pm and 4:00pm, its your chance to sample some of the bake-off entries and pass your own judgement! Enjoy a cup of tea and a natter with friends and neighbours, entry is free.


Saturday 7th September, 2019 - Duck Race

The duck race starts at 6:00pm by the ‘Leek Road’ bridge over the River Manifold. Cash prizes for the ducks that come in 1st, 2nd or 3rd; and a booby prize for the last duck!
